New research from the University of Minnesota' GroupLens Lab suggests that people often have contrasting interpretations of the exact same emoji -- and that differences in how an emoji displays on one device versus another can make things even worse.

So, how to know if the emoji you’re sending look totally differently to the people on the other end? It depends on what device and messaging platform the recipient is using, and/or which emoji font they’ve chosen.
那么，如何知道你发出的emoji表情在对方的手机上的显示不会引起“沉船”事故呢？这得看接收者使用的设备及信息平台，以及发出的emoji表情是哪一个。
The reason is that not all emoji are created equal. Unicode, the computer industry standard for characters and text, now recognizes more than 1,000 different emoji. It provides a code and description of each emoji -- for example, U+1F601 and "grinning face with smiling eyes" -- but it does not offer an actual image.
原因在于不同的emoji表情的并不是被唯一创造出来的。Unicode（计算机领域对字符和文本的一项编码标准），目前可识别1000多种不同的emoji。它为每个emoji提供了唯一的编码和描述---比如，U+1F601及“眼睛有笑意的微笑脸”---但是它并没有规定具体的形象。
So companies such as Google and Apple are left to decide what an emoji looks like for their users. And sometimes their illustrations don't quite line up.
这就给Google及Apple等公司留下了发挥的空间来决定对他们的用户呈现出什么样的emoji形象。但是有时候他们的图像并不一致。
不仅不同的手机品牌商所采用的emoji形象不一样，不同的软件平台比如Twitter、Snapchat、Instagram上使用的emoji也不一样。

有学者做了一项研究，选取了超过300个被试来观察在不同平台上的emoji表情，然后根据感受在-5~5的区间内打分，正分为感觉积极，负分为感觉消极。
对于"😁”这个表情（好吧，seed君也不知道你们手机上现在显示出来的是啥样子的），研究得到的结果是这样的：
On average, respondents thought the Apple version of the "grinning face with smiling eyes" emoji meant something bad, but the version from Google and others meant something good.
平均来说，用户对于Apple上微笑脸的反应偏消极，而对Google及其他平台上的这个表情反应相对积极。
不过，和有些人的小船似乎翻得更容易。
不同人对于Apple上😁这一表情的反应差别也很大：
不同的平台上emoji显示不一样，说翻就翻；
发送了错误的emoji，说翻就翻；
发了对的emoji但对方和你的理解不一样，说翻就翻。
